New Dashboard

I have quite a few reasons to make a new dashboard:

  1. The existing dashboard was only made to get through the SVA - and was never going to be my final design.
  2. I bought a set of capri clocks a while back- I gather they are from a late model as there's a volt meter rather than a ammeter. They were a cheaper option than a whole set of new clocks.
  3. A colleague at work also offered to veneer the new dashboard in walnut - which is an offer you can't turn down!
  4. I have a new ignition switch and a push button starter that I have had sitting in the garage for more months than I wish to remember.

Well, I have successfully wired up the Capri clocks to the Sierra loom. I looked on the web for a list of the wiring changes required, but I only found half-sets, none of which matched my car fully. So below is the correct wiring for a Mk3 (voltmeter) Capri cluster and 1989 2.0l LX Sierra loom.

I also fitted the new ignition and starter button - hours of endless fun turning the key and pressing the button.

The last things I have to do before giving the dashboard to my colleague to veneer are:

  • trim the edges of the dashboard so the rubber edging will fit and allow the bonnet to shut properly
  • sand down the edges to make it smooth
  • glue the fixing bolts in place.

Well the Dashboard is abck and veneered - and I have to say I think he has done a great job. I still have a few things to finish it of properly (edge trim, chrome bezels, light covers etc). Here are picturs so far.
